The Inspiration to write this article has been the invite by "Krishnamohan Baba" for Audio release of "Shirdi Baba's" - Sai Bodha Album.

I take this opportunity in Wishing the Album a Grand Success. Let it teach, preach, reach the message of Shraddha and Saburi to all in their Search for Sai, and take the Universal Message of Sai to Glocal devotees of Telugu origin beyond his form and name into the hearts and minds of one and all.

This is a humble attempt to highlight the Greatness of Guru in the context of today's world which unfortunately respects the Guru from outside but seeks his prospects from Inside.

Starting with the story of Shukracharya during Vamana avatar. All of us remember and recollect how Vamana approached Mahabali in the midst of a Grand Yagna, during those days when such events where conducted to conquer the Universe through Yagas and Yagna's in the fire of Yantra, Tantra & Mantra unlike today in the world of women, wine and wealth.

As Mahabali was a great Asura king in the lineage of Bhakta Prahalad, he had the qualities of his Grandfather except for immense pride in himself, which was a bane to the world and a boon for the avatar of Lord. Cutting the long story, short. The Importance of Guru, I would like to highlight by this narration is, even though he was an Asura Guru:Shukracharya. What he has shown us by this story is when, a guru is commited to his sishya no surprise can surpass Guru’s blessings similarly when a Guru is displeased even the Mighty force cannot save the Simple soul.

When Vamana requested Mahabali for “three foot of Earth” Suhkracharya immediately warned his sishya of the consequences since the short young brahmin was none other than Mahavishnu in disguise. Mahabali, with his usual pride disregarded even his Guru’s advise saying, it was all the more a moment of Pride that Mahavishnu will have his hands below his for a few seconds during Dhanam when Arghyam is released from Kamandalam as water poured from giver’s hands to receivers’ hands will confirm the transaction like in today’s marriage ceremony during kanya dhanam, signfying that the transfer of “three foot of earth” has concluded.

But, on the contrary when Mahabali tried to pour water into Vamana’s hands from the kamandalam the water did not find an outlet to flow, in a moment’s thought the Mahavishnu in Vamana understood it was the play of Shukracharya as a bee in Kamandalam’s outlet which he immediately cleared by piercing using a dharba stem which a traditional brahmin always carries, immediately Shukracharya taking his original form with a damaged eye out of the dharba pierce cursed his sishya that for having not listened to his Guru’s advise, he will lose all that he thinks are his, including himself, rest is history.

But, an important observation which is not mentioned widely is the importance of Guru in protecting a sishya’s future even after Mahavishnu himself decided to change Mahabali’s fortunes. Only, when Guru voluntered to curse his sishya did Mahavishnu get an opportunity to himself remember his Consort Mahalakshmi was hidden by the lion cloth covering his chest (vakshasthala) and hence her mere glance did not fall on the kamandalam for the wealth called water to flow freely into his hands, not until Guru Shukracharya curse Mahabali, whence Mahavishnu decided to move his lioncloth allowing Lakshmi’s Grace in the form of her Lakshmi Katashayam to fall on the kamandalam for the transfer of “three foot of earth”.

Moving from Vamana to Krishna, jumping from 5th to 8th in the order of avatar recollecting from Bhagavatam a simple incident in Sandipini maharishi’s ashram but which has a powerful precedent in all our life’s about Guru.

During Krishna’s Gurukulam in Sandipini maharishi’s ashramam along with his classmates which included Sudama, one day all the boys started writing on the Maharishi’s huge board (called black board yes’day ; today it has changed to White ) before Sandipini arrived. Shortly, as the Guru was about to arrive all the students in the ashramam started moving back to their seats after erasing their respective scribble on the board and came back to the seat, while the board was clean except for a single scribble which could not be erased by one and all when tried.

In the meanwhile, the Maharishi entered the classroom without realising the mischief of his students, started erasing the last content on the board to keep the slate clean for a new beginning to the surprise of all students the scribble which could not be erased by all present there, started disappearing as the Master – Sandipini started cleaning the board.

The essence of this message is, only a Guru can erase and override the writing of Lord himself in this case Gokula Krishna. A true Story which captures the overriding powers of a Guru, while the earlier story highlighted the undercover protection of a Guru. Moving to the next story which is a little more exciting for it is closer in timing and meaning to all of us in this Age of Darkness as we fondly call him the Kaliyuga deivam.

When there was controversy surrounding as to who is the deity on top of Venkatachalam during 10 - 11th Century pallava rule, it was Swami Ramanuja, an acharya who established the Vishishtadvaita school of thought took the onus on himself to establish the truth. Rama (The Lord of Tretayuga) + Nuja (brother to) meaning “Brother to the Lord of Tretayuga” that is Lakshmana born in Aslesha star (representing coiled serpent) who was an incarnation of adisesha himself took upon his soldiers to establish the authenticity of the Lord’s original form back; by placing all the instruments of various deities used for defence and offense inside Lord’s Sanctum Sanctorum for a night.

When everybody retired to bed that night, Swami Ramanuja assumed his original form as adisesha and entered the Lord’s abode inside and requested him to accept his humble plea to decorate himself with Shanka (Conch) and Chakra (Discus) and appear as Sriman Narayana to one and all ; to put to rest the challenge of competing sects of Shakti, Saiva, Subramanya. The point here is not to discriminate or demonstrate superiority of one sect against another, but Lord’s unflinching commitment to Acharya’s words to accept and embrace the form which, was Swami Ramanuja the Guru’s vision of the Lord.

All three stories reflect, one Truth Guru is above God in creating good karma, protecting karma of dharma and destroying evil karma as Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra. When Guru is so important in our lives, how important will be Guru’s message in the form of Sai Bodha

Dharbai - The Holy Grass

This article is on one of the practices widely used by Indian Brahmins all over using a Holy Grass named Dharbham or Dharbai.

In all functions, auspicious or inauspicious, a performing person needs to wear a ring made of this Dharbham. But many have lost the reason of why it is to be used in the first place.

What I learnt from my father is proved to be accurately correct by a Medicine Practitioner.

A Doctor named Sadhashiv Rao, once visited my home. When the topic turned to many subjects, I needed to tell him about the Holy Grass named Dharbham. When I told him about the usage and the values, he could not just believe my words.

So, he took out a bunch of the Dharbham from me, went straight to the clinic to take an x-ray of his palm, by covering his hand with the Dharbham. To his utter surprise, he found that the grass absorbed about 60% of the radiation!

When the so powerful X-ray radiation can be absorbed by the Holy Grass,
why can it not absorb the ill radiations spread over the atmosphere?
While chanting and reciting some Vedic phrases and verses, one needs to wear a ring made of Dharbham
on his right hand ring finger.

The count of leaves depends upon the ceremony that is held viz.:
for some ceremonies related to death
only Single leafed Dharbham is used;

for Auspicious and daily routine
a ring made of two leaves is used;
for inauspicious but not death related functions, (i.e. Amavasya Tharppanam, Pithru Pooja etc)
a three leaf Dharbham ring is used.

And for the Temple Prayer and Pooja,
a Four-leaf Dharbham ring is used.

Also, when a fire ritual known as Agni Santana is performed, these Dharbham are spread all the four sides of the Agni Kundam.
Also, during the Eclipse time,
these Dharbham are used to cover all food items to protect them
from the harmful ultra violet radiation.

Whenever any function is held,
firstly they perform a site-cleansing act known as “Sudhhi Punyaahavachanam”.
While reciting the selective verses,
they hold the Dharbham bunch in their hand and placing the tip point of it over the vessel containing water.

Thus the recited vibration values are absorbed by water in the vessel through the Dharbham.

They found that the Holy Grass known as Dharbham has the highest value in conducting the phonetic vibrations through its tip.

Later, they sprinkle the Holy water at every nook and corner of the place, where the ceremony or function is held.

A Dharbham without the tip is considered of no value, as the conductor-type value is lost in it.

My father, Late Shri Ramabathrachariar of Mukkur, fondly called by everyone as Sriraman, has given me the immense values of Dharbham and its usage. With Sanskrit phonetic sound and vibration, using the Dharbham increases its value.

The usage varies according to the functions. It is really a marvel, that in those days of Vedic Era, the Sages & Saints of Hindu land used to control the Magnetic path disturbances, just by simply using this Dharbham!

Apart from the above, Dharbham cannot be planted and grown everywhere.

It only grows naturally at selective places and available almost in every
state in India.

Some learned scholars name it after Saint Vishwaamitra - hence Dharbham is known and called as Vishwaamitra.
If it is kept for a longer time, say for more than six months, then it loses it value and the power of absorbing the radiation or magnetic path control values.

Dharbhamcannot just be plucked straight or cut on any day; There is a specific Slokha that is to be recited before cutting it;

That too it can be cut only on the day next to Full Moon - known as Krishna Paksha Pradamai.

A Dharbham without its tip portion is not to be used for making a Ring like item known as "Pavithram".

Why hasn’t India produced an Apple, Google or Microsoft?

India is proud to say it has produced Indian's who have contributed in sustaining the ideas, brand and revenues be it Next Gen enterprises or the named cos here - Apple, Google or Microsoft but that doesn't answer the question directly.

The QUESTION is : When will it happen in India ?

When the Majority of Indian consumer needs,desires & tastes grow beyond simple Cost & Capacity equation to Composite Comfort & Capability story which will hopefully lead to the maturing of the Indian market, then the Indian innovation story begins to shape beyond Indian shores.

What this does is to translate the Indian consumer needs into products which are not just produced locally, but designed and ideated locally with Global Reach and Local relevance ; like what is happening today in a Rich nation like US with a Mature market demo-graphics and an Assertive consumer psycho-graphics.

Innovation will happen when we move from running efficient "production" factories to effective "R&D" factories. Today, everybody knows America guards its "R&D" factories carefully & meticulously while India and China have built Service and Manufacturing factories if not "all" majority of them from borrowed technology, patents, copyrights & trademarks from the matured consumer market driving the "R&D" engine of US.

Is India right now capable of creating the next Apple, Google or Microsoft ? If not, what does India need to do in order to foster innovation at home ?

India cannot change everything in the micro short term neither can it structure the macro long term in a planned manner, but what it can do is to invest, inculcate & incubate - INNOVATION in a cross section of the Indian Investor, Ivy leagues, Intelligentsia, Industry and be ready for the Intelligent involving and irresistible phenomenon called the Indian Consumer to takeoff with time.

I am sure, India will grow and innovate in comfort & capability to not just copy the Apple, Google & Microsoft but will hopefully create the next "Orange, Regal & Macro soft" :)

Or A Ekadasi which comes two times a month which is the most auspicious for the auspicious - Sri Hari.

Or A Sravana nakshtra which comes once a month on which he has incarnated n. of times including atop tirumala as Srinivasa.

OR A Wednesday which is day the Lord proudly adorns the kausthubam mani on his chest..

Or A Monday the day on which he landed on Tirumala hills from vaikuntam (which coincided with Vijayadasami as well)

OR A Thursday when he opens his already open EYE to the blind public in the form of Netra darshan.....

OR A Friday, when he has his abhishekam with Bilva patra and Sandal Turmeric water like Sri devi and Bhu devi...

OR A Tuesday, where he pervades all the pillars/sthamba with his presence as hiranyanga garbha...for a four year old devotee prahalad back in Satya yuga, but available even today in Kali...omnipresent in the form of Yoga narasimha adjacent to the main temple, close to the foundation pillar of the Sri vari nilayam.

OR A Sunday, when ALL of us relax by sleeping all day, but he still stands for his devotee's darshan....24 x 7 for the one hr the temple is closed somedays, he goes to Sriranga for a brief nap or his travel time from tirumala to srirangam takes away even that one hr.

What can i say, as to When you should visit him.......All i can say, is go with A pure, sincere and noble heart....As a true Sri vaishanava (A Well wisher) for one and all...and any day becomes auspicious because he is the very Auspicious personified :) !!!!
